Quick answer

A government fire post is paid from a pay matrix. A central fireman (Air Force or DRDO) is on Level 2, which starts at Rs 19,900 basic and rises one cell a year to Rs 63,200. With dearness allowance at 60% of basic from 1 January 2026, a new Level 2 fireman draws Rs 31,840 a month in basic plus DA, before HRA and deductions.

Leading Fireman and Fire Engine Driver in the Air Force are Level 3 (from Rs 21,700) and Station Officer Level 5 (from Rs 29,200). Odisha pays its Fireman from Rs 19,900 and its Assistant Station Officer from Rs 25,500, also with 60% DA. A private fire safety officer has no official pay scale: the employer sets it.

How to read a fire service salary from the pay matrix

  1. Find the level in the post's own rules

The recruitment rules or the notice name the level: Level-2 for an Air Force Fireman, Level-4 for an Odisha Fireman. A pre-2016 notice prints a pay band and grade pay instead, which the matrix header converts, so Grade Pay 2000 is Level 3.

  2. Start at cell 1

Direct recruits join at the first cell of the level. Each level of the central matrix up to Level 10 has 40 cells.

  3. Move one cell for each year

Central staff get one increment a year, on 1 January or 1 July depending on the date of joining or promotion. Odisha's next increment falls 12 months after the last, and an Odisha fireman draws none until the basic training is passed.

  4. Add DA on basic only

DA is a percentage of the basic pay in the matrix, not of any special pay. Fractions of 50 paise and above are rounded up to a rupee.

  5. Add HRA if you draw it

Central HRA is a percentage of basic by city class, with a rupee floor. State and Delhi HRA come from their own orders.

  6. Leave deductions to the pay slip

NPS, income tax and group insurance come off the gross, and transport or risk allowances may be added. None of these is set by the matrix, so no in-hand figure is printed here.
