Fireman recruitment in India: eligibility, physical test, pay and promotion

Updated By Flamekite Editorial DeskFacts checked against official sources on

Quick answer

There is no single fireman exam. CISF recruits its Constable/Fire itself, the Airports Authority hires region by region, the Air Force and DRDO run their own civilian fire posts, and each state picks a board: Kerala PSC, Andhra Pradesh's SLPRB, Bihar's CSBC. Every body sets its own education, age and measurements.

The entry bar runs from Matriculation to the 12th with Science. Men's height is 165 to 170 cm in the notices read, ages run from 18 to 23 (CISF) up to 18 to under 32 (Andhra Pradesh), and the entry pay printed is Level-2 (Rs 19,900-63,200) to Rs 31,000-92,000. Pay, rules and dates below come from the notice or rules of the body that recruits.

On 26 October 2026 no fireman notice with an open application window was found. CISF's page showed no dated Constable/Fire notice, and Andhra Pradesh's 158 Fireman posts (notified 16 September 2026) had no application dates yet.

How to become a fireman in India: the selection steps

  1. Pick the recruiting body

A fireman is hired by CISF, AAI, the Air Force, DRDO, HAL, a state board or a city corporation, never by one national exam. Choose by your education: Matriculation, the 10th with a diploma, or the 12th with Science.

  2. Check age and education on the cut-off date

Andhra Pradesh counted age on 1 July 2026 and HAL on 1 January 2026. Relaxations for reserved categories and ex-servicemen come from the notice, not from this page.

  3. Apply only on the body's own site

CISF recruits Constable/Fire through its own process, Kerala through the PSC's portal, Andhra Pradesh through the SLPRB, Ahmedabad through its municipal portal. A notice number and a closing date must appear there.

  4. Clear the measurement stage

CISF starts with a Height Bar Test, then PET and PST. AAI's candidates face a physical measurement test after the computer test. Check the limit in your notice before you spend on later stages.

  5. Sit the written or computer test

AAI runs a computer-based test first. Andhra Pradesh sets a preliminary written test and then a final. CISF's written exam follows the physical stage for Constable/Fire.

  6. Pass the endurance test

Events differ: the Air Force tests a 63.5 kg fireman lift over 183 m in 96 seconds, DRDO a 1,600 m run in 7 minutes for men, AAI five events of 20 marks each.

  7. Document check and medical

CISF ends with a detailed and a review medical examination (DME and RME). DRDO sets 6/6 distant vision without aids and no night or colour blindness.

  8. Merit list, offer and training

CISF issues the final merit list and offer of appointment. Kerala's Fire and Rescue Officer (Trainee) spends 12 months in training.

CISF fireman recruitment: Constable/Fire and DCPO

CISF runs two fire entry posts itself, Constable/Fire and Constable/Driver-cum-Pump-Operator (DCPO). Its page of 26 October 2026 prints no vacancy count or dates for either.

Constable/Fire asks for the 12th with a science subject, age 18 to 23 and a male height of 170 cm with a chest of 80 to 85 cm. The page says the process runs through CISF itself, and vacancies are divided among States and UTs by population ratio and then between Naxal and non-Naxal areas. The order given is Height Bar Test, PET and PST with document verification, written examination, DME and RME, then the final merit list and offer of appointment.

Constable/DCPO is an all-India post: Matriculation, age 21 to 27, a valid heavy vehicle licence (or a transport vehicle licence) with a light vehicle licence and a motorcycle-with-gear licence, and 3 years of driving experience. Its process adds a driving test and runs a written exam by OMR or computer.

The Fire Wing these posts feed covers 115 installations. It has been a dedicated fire cadre since 1991, and its Fire Service Training Institute was set up in 1987 at Deoli and moved to NISA Hakimpet in 1999. CISF's page prints no pay level for either post, so none is given here. Sub-Inspector/Fire is an officer post recruited through the Staff Selection Commission and is mapped on the fire jobs hub.

Fireman training: who trains you and who asks for it first

Some bodies train you after selection; others ask for a fire-fighting course before you apply.

  1. If You aim at the Air Force or HAL

Train first. The Air Force wants fire-fighting training from a state fire service or recognised institute; HAL wants a basic fire-fighting course of at least 3 months and a heavy vehicle licence. IAF recruitment rules

  2. If You aim at AAI

A course helps but is not a condition. AAI lists its Basic Fire Fighting course, the NFSC Sub-Officer course and NCC 'B' as desirable for Junior Assistant (Fire Services). AAI NR 01/2025

  3. If You aim at CISF

CISF trains its own cadre. Its Fire Service Training Institute was set up in 1987 at Deoli and moved to NISA Hakimpet in 1999. CISF Fire Wing

  4. If You aim at Kerala

Selection comes first, then a 12-month trainee year; Kerala's fire academy is at Viyyur, Thrissur. Wikipedia: Kerala Firenews report

  5. If You want to become an Air Force Station Officer

The Senior Fire Supervisors Course from the Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES), DRDO, is a condition of promotion after 8 years' service. IAF recruitment rules

Fireman promotion ladder: Air Force and Kerala

Promotion is inside one service. The Air Force's rules give the clearest official ladder; Delhi's 10 ranks are mapped on the fire jobs hub.

  1. Fireman, Level-2

Direct entry at 18 to 25 with Matriculation. The rules provide 317 posts, subject to variation. IAF recruitment rules

  2. Leading Fireman, Level-3

By promotion from Fireman with 3 years' regular service in the grade and a pass in the departmental trade test. The rules provide 86 posts. IAF recruitment rules

  3. Station Officer, Level-5

By promotion of a Leading Fireman or Fire Engine Driver with 8 years' regular service and the Senior Fire Supervisors Course from CFEES. The rules provide 26 posts. IAF recruitment rules

  4. Kerala: Fire and Rescue Officer to Station Officer

Kerala's ladder runs Fire and Rescue Officer, Fire and Rescue Officer (Driver), Senior Fire and Rescue Officer, Assistant Station Officer and Station Officer, then District and Regional Fire Officer, Director and Director General. It has 129 stations and about 4,800 executive staff. Wikipedia: Kerala Firenews report

  5. Kerala: direct entry as Station Officer

A science graduate can enter as Station Officer (Trainee) through Kerala PSC Cat. No. 047/2026 without starting as a fireman. Kerala PSC 047/2026

Questions about fireman recruitment

What is the qualification for a fireman?

It depends on the body. CISF Constable/Fire needs the 12th with a science subject, Kerala needs Plus Two, Andhra Pradesh needs Intermediate, the Air Force needs Matriculation plus fire-fighting training, and AAI takes the 10th with a 3-year diploma or the 12th.

What is the height required for a fireman?
