Quick answer

The core fire IS codes are IS 2190:2024 for portable extinguishers, IS 3844:1989 and IS 13039:2014 for internal and external hydrants, IS 15105:2021 for sprinklers, IS 2189:2026 for detection and alarm, IS 15301:2003 for pumps and IS 9668:1990 for water supplies. These are the editions the BIS standards database showed as current on 24 October 2026.

Most are voluntary until a rule, a bye-law, a fire NOC condition or a contract names them. Only one fire product group has a compulsory BIS mark today: the extinguishers themselves, under the Fire Extinguishers (Quality Control) Order, 2023 (S.O. 3585(E), 9 August 2023). No sprinkler, detector, alarm, hydrant-valve, hose or fire-door order was in force on that date.

How to check a fire IS code edition is current on BIS: 6 steps

  1. Open the BIS standards database

Go to standards.bis.gov.in, BIS's Know Your Standards search. It is the public status record; the BIS online store sells the text.

  2. Search by the IS number alone

Type the number (for example IS 2189) without the year, so every edition shows, current and withdrawn.

  3. Read the status and dates

Each record shows whether the edition is current or withdrawn, its publication date and, if withdrawn, the withdrawal date.

  4. Note the revision and any amendments

A fifth revision such as IS 2189:2026 replaces earlier ones; check for amendments to the edition you hold.

  5. For a product, check the QCO list

Open BIS's list of products under compulsory certification (Scheme-I) and look for the order and the edition it names.

  6. Write the edition and the date you checked into the contract

Record the number, year and check date in the AMC, purchase order or audit report so a later withdrawal is not read back into it.

Fire safety QCOs: which BIS marks are compulsory

A Quality Control Order (QCO) makes the BIS mark compulsory for a product. Among fire equipment, only extinguishers are covered.

HFFR cables (IS 17048:2018), LPG rubber hose (IS 9573, S.O. 478(E), 28 January 2020) and flame-producing lighters (S.O. 2986(E), 5 July 2023) are also on the BIS list. Where a QCO names an older edition than BIS's current one, the edition in the order governs certification until DPIIT or the ministry amends it.

Fire IS code editions replaced or withdrawn, 2022 to 2026

Several fire codes changed edition in the last four years. A tender, audit report or old textbook that names a withdrawn edition is quoting the wrong standard.

  1. 14 March 2022

BIS withdrew IS 15105:2002 (sprinklers; IS 15105:2021 current), IS 15908:2011 (alarm panels), IS 8757:1999, IS 15493:2004 and IS 5509:2000, and the old two-part IS 3614 for fire doors. BIS standards database

  2. 20 May 2024

IS 15683:2006 (portable extinguishers), IS 636:1988 (delivery hose) and IS 4989:2006 (foam concentrate) were withdrawn; the 2018 editions of the first two stand. BIS standards database

  3. 18 October 2024

IS 2190:2024, the fifth revision of the extinguisher code, was published. BIS standards database

  4. 4 April 2025

IS 3594:1991 on warehouses and cold storage was withdrawn; IS 3594:2024 is current. BIS standards database

  5. 9 April 2025

IS 2190:2010 was withdrawn, but the 2010 number still appears in tenders, such as a university rate contract of January 2023. BIS standards database

  6. 18 July 2025

IS 11360:1985 (smoke detectors) and IS 2175:1988 (heat detectors) were withdrawn. Detector product standards are now the IS/ISO 7240 parts. BIS standards database

  7. September 2025

The 1985 and 1993 editions of IS 884 (hose reel), IS 903 (branch pipes) and IS 5290 (landing valves) were withdrawn; 2025 editions published in March 2025 apply. BIS standards database

  8. 4 December 2025

IS 9457:2005 on safety colours and signs was withdrawn; IS 9457:2025 is current. BIS standards database

  9. 17 March 2026

IS 2189:2026, the fifth revision of the detection and alarm code, was published. BIS standards database

  10. 17 September 2026

IS 2189:2008 was withdrawn after running alongside the 2026 edition for 6 months. Maharashtra's Form B guidelines of 7 July 2026 still name the 2008 edition. BIS standards database

How a fire IS code becomes binding: NBC, NBCS 2026, state rules

An IS code binds only when a law, a bye-law, a fire NOC condition or a contract points to it. The code does not bind by itself.

A QCO is the one route where the standard binds the maker: no extinguisher may be made or sold in India without the BIS mark. For everything else the route runs through the building. A state fire law or building bye-law adopts the National Building Code, the code lists the IS codes for each system, and the fire officer applies them when granting a fire NOC.

NBC 2016 was withdrawn on 30 April 2026 and replaced by the National Building Construction Standards 2026 (SP 7:2026), which is itself voluntary. Its Part F, Fire and Life Safety, carries a list of standards on pages 235 to 243 of the Goa-hosted copy. Two laws had written it in by 24 October 2026: Uttar Pradesh's Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Rules 2026 (rule 12) make Part F binding on employers in buildings of 5 or more floors or 20 m and above, and Assam's fire Act, as amended on 14 August 2026, requires measures per the BIS National Building Construction Standards.

State rules also name standards directly. Maharashtra's Form B guidelines of 7 July 2026 require the licensed agency to test each system against the current edition of 14 listed standards. A tender or an AMC order that names an IS number binds the contractor to that number, which is why an old edition in a contract matters.

Which IS code for which fire system: 8 questions answered

Match the question to the standard. Each answer names the code and what it settles; the design numbers sit in the standard itself.

  1. If Which IS code for a fire extinguisher?

IS 2190:2024 for choosing, placing, inspecting and maintaining; IS 15683:2018 (portable) and IS 16018:2012 (wheeled) for the product itself, which must carry the BIS mark under S.O. 3585(E). Dry powder is IS 4308:2019. BIS standards database

  2. If Which IS code for a fire fighting system as a whole?

There is no single code. Part F of NBCS 2026 (or Part 4 of NBC 2016) decides which systems a building needs; each system then has its own IS code: IS 9668:1990 for water supply, IS 15301:2003 for pumps, plus the hydrant, sprinkler and alarm codes below. BIS, SP 7:2026

  3. If Which IS code for a fire hydrant system?

IS 3844:1989 for internal hydrants and hose reels, IS 13039:2014 for external hydrants. Landing valves are IS 5290:2025, delivery hose IS 636:2018 and branch pipes IS 903:2025. BIS standards database

  4. If Which IS code for a sprinkler system?

IS 15105:2021 for design and installation, IS 9972:2023 for the heads. Sprinkler heads have no compulsory BIS mark: the 2025 order is a draft. BIS standards database

  5. If Which IS code for a fire alarm system?

IS 2189:2026 for selecting, installing and maintaining; IS 15908:2021 for the control panel; the IS/ISO 7240 parts for detectors and manual call points. Maharashtra's circular of 16 October 2026 cites IS 2189:2026 clause 4.9 for wireless detection. MFS circular 1420

  6. If Which IS code for a fire pump?

IS 15301:2003, still the current edition. The pump's duty comes from the hydrant or sprinkler code it serves. BIS standards database

  7. If Which IS code for a fire door or a wall?

IS 3614:2021 for fire doors and doorsets; IS/ISO 834 for fire-resistance tests; IS 12458:2019 for firestops where pipes and cables pass through. BIS standards database

  8. If Which IS code for a warehouse, kitchen or cinema?

IS 3594:2024 for warehouses and cold storage, IS 18271:2023 for commercial kitchens, IS 4878:1986 for cinema bye-laws and IS 8758:2013 for pandals and temporary structures. BIS standards database

Fire IS code editions that disagree: 5 cases and what to do

Three places can name different editions of one standard. When they do, the document that binds you decides.

  • If A state circular still names a withdrawn edition (Maharashtra's July 2026 guidelines name IS 2189:2008).

Ask the fire office in writing whether the 2026 edition is accepted, and keep both the reply and the BIS withdrawal date on file. MFS Form B guidelines

  • Whether a final sprinkler heads QCO has been notified: only the draft of 8 July 2025 was found. Aleph Indianews report
  • Editions of IS 901, IS 902, IS 906, IS 2097 and IS 8442 (couplings, branch pipes, monitors): Part F names them, but they were not looked up on BIS. BIS, SP 7:2026
  • Design values (flow rates, pressures, spacing): these sit in the paid standards and are left as 'set in the standard'.
  • Whether a QCO named an HFFR cable order separately: IS 17048:2018 is on the BIS list, but the order name was not isolated. BIS compulsory list
  • Whether the fire-resistant cabinet QCO of 23 July 2025 (IS 14203) exists: a consultancy lists it; BIS's Scheme-I list does not. BIS compulsory list
