Overview

This bank holds 44 multiple-choice questions on fixed automatic sprinkler systems, in four sets of 11: hazard classes and design density, head spacing and location, pipework pumps and water supply, and alarms testing and maintenance. Every answer names the clause of IS 15105:2021 that settles it.

The code is the first revision of the Bureau of Indian Standards code of practice for the design, installation and maintenance of fixed automatic sprinkler systems, published in July 2021. Figures such as 126 m2 for a light hazard compartment, 1.8 m minimum head spacing and a 45 m limit on height difference per installation come straight from it.

Water spray and deluge systems are outside the code (cl. 1.4), and the Table 31 maintenance schedule disagrees with the text of clause 15.6.4 on flushing, so no question asks the flushing interval. Questions are Flamekite's own, not past papers.

Every question and answer rests on a clause of IS 15105:2021, read on 26 October 2026, and on no other source. The questions are Flamekite's own, not past papers, and no exam notice read for this site lists sprinklers as a syllabus topic. Building-specific water and pumping rules come from SP 7 (Part 4), which this bank does not test.

Sprinkler system MCQ: how Flamekite's exam pages treat the topic

The two exam notices read for this site do not print a sprinkler syllabus, so this bank is practice for the job, not a paper prediction.

Telangana Fire Fighter, 2026
The two written tests name only general topics such as English, arithmetic and reasoning, plus 9 syllabus items in all. Sprinklers are not named. TSLPRB notice 189/2026
AAI Junior Assistant (Fire Services)
The notices print no topic-wise syllabus, number of questions or marks per subject, so sprinklers cannot be claimed as tested. Flamekite's topic map lists them as a study area only. AAI NR 01/2025
How to use the bank
Treat it as job knowledge for a fire officer or a candidate preparing for a fire service interview, and check a notice's own syllabus before you plan. BIS, IS 15105:2021

Sprinkler system MCQ: 6 common traps and the clause that settles each

Six mix-ups that cost marks, each answered by one clause of IS 15105:2021.

  • You may have read

Every hazard class gets the same 4.5 m head spacing.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Light and ordinary hazard allow 4.5 m, but high hazard is limited to 3.75 m (cl. 9.17.2). BIS, IS 15105:2021

  • You may have read

A smaller design area allows a lower density.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Density is never reduced for an area below the design area: 84 m2 light, 360 m2 ordinary, 260 m2 high (cl. 8.1). BIS, IS 15105:2021

  • You may have read

Goods can be stored anywhere in an ordinary hazard area.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Only in blocks of 50 m2 or less with 2.4 m clear and within the Table 6 heights; otherwise the whole occupancy is high hazard (cl. 8.1.2). BIS, IS 15105:2021

  • You may have read

A bigger pump than needed is optional.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Pump capacity must exceed the calculated flow and pressure by at least 20 percent (cl. 12.1(e)). BIS, IS 15105:2021

  • You may have read

Any hazard may use a pre-calculated pipe schedule.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Only light and ordinary occupancies up to 5,000 m2 and not gridded or looped; all other cases are fully calculated (cl. 10.3). BIS, IS 15105:2021

  • You may have read

Deluge and water spray systems are part of this code.

    Myth

    What the sources say

They are excluded and covered in IS 15325 and IS 15519 (cl. 1.4). BIS, IS 15105:2021

Sprinkler system MCQ: where to read the rule behind each answer

Four Flamekite pages teach the topics in these 44 questions, from the same standard and its neighbours.

Sprinkler system MCQ: what is not confirmed

Three points a reader may expect are not settled in the 2021 text read, so no question tests them.

  • If How often to flush the pipework

Clause 15.6.4(g) says flush the entire system at least yearly, while Table 31 gives 2 years for main piping and 6 months for the sprinkler network. The code disagrees with itself, so no question asks it. BIS, IS 15105:2021

  • If Whether the code has been amended since July 2021

No amendment appears in the text read, but the BIS amendment record was not checked. Not confirmed. BIS, IS 15105:2021

  • If Water and pumping for a named building type

Clause 1.6 sends building groups to Table 7 of SP 7 (Part 4), which this bank did not read. Clauses 12 and 13 apply to the occupancies not in that table. BIS, IS 15105:2021
