How fire exams work, and how to prepare

Overview

Flamekite covers two fire service recruitments in full, the Airports Authority of India Junior Assistant (Fire Services) and the Telangana Fire Fighter, and 11 topic question banks with 468 questions: extinguishers, fire alarms, sprinklers, hydrants, the National Building Code, the Factories Act, and the MSIHC, Petroleum, Gas Cylinders, SMPV and Explosives Rules. Every bank answer names the clause or section that makes it correct.

The two notices print very little fire science. AAI prints no topic-wise syllabus, and Telangana's nine syllabus topics are all general studies. So the banks prepare you for the job and for the fire half of a qualification paper, while the exam pages report each pattern exactly as the notice prints it.

Start with the exam page for the notice you will sit, then work the banks in the route below, from fire classes to detection, water and building rules. Exams whose notices Flamekite has not verified are named further down as not yet covered.

Patterns and posts are those of the AAI notices (Advt 01/2025/NR and 01/2025/DR/NER) and Telangana notification Rc No. 189/Rect./Rect-2/2026, read on 26 October 2026, and each is shown only as its exam page states it. The banks are Flamekite's own questions written from the standards listed, not past papers. Check the recruiter's own site before you apply.

Fire exams by subject: which exam and bank covers what

Eleven fire subjects, the Flamekite bank for each, and what each notice says about the subject.

Neither notice names a fire topic: AAI prints no topic-wise syllabus and Telangana's 9 topics are general studies. Both exam pages carry a Flamekite study map that lists the subjects below, and an AAI paper can test fire subjects in its qualification half, where 50% of the questions are on subjects of the qualification. Treat the grid as preparation, not as the syllabus.

Each fire subject, its Flamekite bank and whether the two exam pages' study maps list it, read on 26 October 2026.

Fire safety MCQ banks: 11 topics, 468 cited questions

Each bank has 40 to 44 questions in four sets, plus the numbers to memorise, common traps and a revision checklist.

How the fire exam question banks work: 5 rules

The same five rules hold in every bank, so a clause you meet in one set is the clause behind the answer.

  • Every question has four options and one best answer, with answer positions mixed. BIS, IS 2189:2026
  • Every answer is explained in one or two sentences that name the clause, such as IS 2190:2024 cl. 8.4.1. IS 2190:2024
  • Questions test one verified fact each; where two parts of a standard disagree, the bank does not ask the point and says so. BIS, IS 15105:2021
  • Rules that belong to a state or a ministry, not to the standard, are not attributed to the standard. BIS, IS 2189:2026
  • The questions are not copied from past papers, coaching sites or the standards' own text; they are paraphrased and cited. BIS, IS 3844:1989

Fire exam study route in 5 stops: classes, systems, building rules

Flamekite’s working from the official rules; no government publishes this figure.

Flamekite's suggested order, from the fire itself to the systems that fight it and the rules that require them; it is a study aid, not an exam rule.

  1. 1. Fire classes and extinguishers

Learn the classes A, B, C, D and F and the portable and wheeled limits, then work the 45-question extinguisher bank. IS 15683:2018

  2. 2. Detection and alarms

Move on to zones, call points and detector spacing, then the 42-question alarm bank. BIS, IS 2189:2026

  3. 3. Sprinklers

Learn the hazard classes and design density before head spacing, then the 44-question sprinkler bank. BIS, IS 15105:2021

  4. 4. Hydrants and water

Take hydrants, wet risers and hose reels last of the four systems, then the 43-question hydrant bank. BIS, IS 3844:1989

  5. 5. Building rules

Finish with exits, stairs and high-rise rules in the 44-question NBC bank, then read the IS code pages for the standards behind the systems. NBC 2016, Part 4

Fire exam myths the notices settle: 4 corrections

Four claims that circulate about fire recruitment tests, set against what the two notices print.

  • You may have read

AAI publishes a fixed fire syllabus and question count.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Neither AAI notice prints a topic-wise syllabus, a question count or marks per subject; it prints only the 50% and 50% split of a 2-hour test. AAI NR 01/2025

  • You may have read

The Telangana written tests include fire science.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Both syllabus annexures name general topics only, 8 in Annexure II and 9 in Annexure III, with no fire topic. TSLPRB notice 189/2026

  • You may have read

The physical test decides your rank.

    Myth

    What the sources say

In both notices the physical stage only qualifies; merit rests on the written test, the CBT for AAI and the final written examination for Telangana. TSLPRB notice 189/2026

  • You may have read

A wrong answer always costs marks.

    Myth

    What the sources say

AAI has no negative marking; Telangana deducts 20 percent of a question's marks in the preliminary test. AAI NR 01/2025

Questions about fire exams and fire safety MCQ practice

How many fire safety MCQ questions does Flamekite have?

468 in 11 topic banks: extinguishers 45, fire alarms 42, sprinklers 44, hydrants 43, NBC fire safety 44, Factories Act 40, MSIHC Rules 40, Petroleum Rules 42, Gas Cylinders Rules 44, SMPV Rules 40 and Explosives Rules 44, plus 28 on the AAI page and 27 on the Telangana page. Every answer names the clause behind it.

How do I prepare for a fireman exam?

Read the recruiter's notice for the pattern and stages, then work the banks in order from fire classes to alarms, sprinklers and hydrants. The notices read print no fire syllabus, so the banks prepare you for the job and the qualification half of a paper.

Are these questions from past papers?

No. They are Flamekite's own, written from Indian Standards, and none is taken from a past paper or a coaching site.

Which fire exams does Flamekite cover?

The AAI Junior Assistant (Fire Services) and the Telangana Fire Fighter recruitments in full. CISF fire, the NFSC sub-officer entrance and Tamil Nadu fireman are not yet covered.

Is there negative marking in fire service exams?

It depends on the notice. AAI's computer-based test has none; Telangana's preliminary test deducts 20 percent of a question's marks for a wrong answer.
