Fire jobs in India: who recruits, what they ask for and what they pay

Quick answer

Fire jobs in India sit in seven places: central forces (CISF), airports (AAI), defence civilian posts (DRDO, Air Force), public-sector companies and ports, state and city fire services, statutory safety officers, and licensed private roles such as Gujarat's Fire Safety Officer. Each has its own recruiter, so there is no single fire-jobs exam.

The entry post is a fireman or firefighter with a 10th, Plus Two or Intermediate pass, a height limit and a physical test. Officer posts ask for a science degree, a BE or BTech in Fire, or an NFSC course. Pay below comes only from the recruiting body's notice or rules.

Flamekite read the official pages on 24 October 2026. CISF showed no dated fire notice. Two fire notices were open: Visakhapatnam Port's Fire Officer (to 28 October) and MRPL's Fire Officer (to 7 November).

Official pay printed in fire recruitment notices

Pay below is the pay level, scale or consolidated sum in the notice or rules. Private-sector pay varies and Flamekite publishes none, because only job-portal figures exist for it.

Age, height and fitness limits in fire recruitment notices

Fire posts almost always test the body first. These are the limits printed in the notices read, in 7 services.

Height limits run from 165 cm to 170 cm for men and from 152 cm to 157 cm for women where women may apply. Several notices add a chest measurement with a 5 cm expansion, a vision standard, and a timed run or fireman's lift.

CISF's Sub-Inspector/Fire needs a chest of 81 to 86 cm and 170 cm height. Andhra Pradesh sets 1,600 m in 8 minutes for Fireman and 1,600 m in 10 minutes for Driver Operator, with a driving test and a 3-hour technical paper for the driver.

Safety officer jobs under the OSH Code 2020

  • Central Rules of 8 May 2026, rule 14: a Safety Committee in every establishment of 500 or more workers, with a 3-year term and quarterly meetings. Rule 15 makes the safety officer the Committee's Secretary. OSH Central Rules 2026
  • Rule 18, construction of 250 or more workers: 1 officer up to 500 workers, 2 up to 1,000, 3 up to 2,000 and 4 up to 5,000. OSH Central Rules 2026
  • Rule 18(2) accepts an engineering degree plus 2 years of supervisory experience, a physics or chemistry degree plus 5 years, an engineering diploma plus 5 years, or a recognised industrial-safety degree or diploma. OSH Central Rules 2026
  • Rule 20, coal and metal mines: 1 officer per 500 workers, holding a DGMS First Class Manager's Certificate. OSH Central Rules 2026
  • The Central Rules set no factory safety officer qualification. For most factories the State is the appropriate government, so each State's OSH rules apply; Flamekite has not read all 36. OSH Central Rules 2026

In-house fire officer posts under NBC 2016 Part 4

Clause 4.10.1 asked large buildings to keep a qualified Fire Officer with at least 3 years of experience. NBC 2016 was withdrawn on 30 April 2026 and replaced by the voluntary NBCS 2026 (SP 7:2026); Flamekite has not compared the clause with the new text, so ask the fire authority before treating the post as required.

What applies Above the 60 m line, so clause 4.10.1 asked for an in-house Fire Officer. Annex D adds a Fire Warden per floor and a Deputy Fire Warden per tenancy and per 700 m² of occupiable tenancy area. NBC 2016 Part 4

  2. Case 2

  3. Case 3

    Institutional, 18 m

What applies Institutional buildings of 15 m and above were on the list. The duties in clause 4.10.2 are equipment upkeep, fire orders, occupant training and liaison with the fire brigade. NBC 2016 Part 4

Fire insurance surveyor licence and Delhi's auditor panel dates

Two licensed fire roles have dates that decide when work can start.

  1. 26 November 2020

The IRDAI (Surveyors and Loss Assessors) Regulations are amended to their current text: a licence listing Fire among its departments is valid 3 years, and membership of the surveyors' institute and a pass in the Insurance Institute of India exam are required. An older reading of 5 years is wrong. IRDAI S&LA Regulations

  2. 16 October 2026

Delhi's gazette moves rules 34 to 38 and the Seventh Schedule, which create 3 levels of empanelled Fire Safety Auditor, to a later start. Delhi Gazette

What Flamekite could not confirm about fire jobs

Five gaps that no official source read on 24 October 2026 closes. Nothing here is guessed.

  • If CISF's Constable/Fire 2026 cycle: the recruitment portal returned a server error all session and the CISF page prints no count or dates.

Read the CISF recruitment page for a dated notice. Army, Navy and Army Ordnance Corps civilian fireman counts came only from job aggregators and are not published here. CISF recruitment

  • If State pay above fireman rank in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Karnataka, West Bengal, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh was not found in an official notice. Delhi's rank pay was read from scanned rules and awaits proof-reading.

Use the pay in the current notice of the state's recruiting board.

  • If Private and Gulf pay: only job-portal averages exist. No official civil defence pay scale for Dubai, Saudi Arabia or Qatar was found.

Treat a Gulf listing's demand for NEBOSH as the recruiter's claim, not a rule, and ask the employer for the written contract.

  • If Railways: no railway fire cadre appears in the 2025-26 Railway Recruitment Board notices read; the reported closure of the RPF fire wing in 1999 was seen only in search results.

Check the Railway Recruitment Board's own notices before relying on either.

  • If Niche roles (PESO, BIS and laboratory fire testers, fire NOC consultants, design engineers) have no licensing or notice Flamekite could verify.

Look for the employer's own advertisement; no regime is described here.

Questions about fire jobs in India

How do I get a fire officer job?

It depends on the employer. AAI's Manager (Fire Services) needs a BE or BTech in Fire, Mechanical or Automobile plus 3 years of fire-service experience, MRPL's Fire Officer needs a BE in Fire or Fire and Safety at 60%, and state services promote from fireman through Sub-Officer and Station Officer. Read the current notice.

What are fire safety officer jobs?

Two different things. A safety officer under OSH Code 2020 section 22(2) is a statutory post in factories of 500 or more workers, hazardous-process factories of 250 or more, construction of 250 or more and mines of 100 or more. In Gujarat a Fire Safety Officer is a licensed private role paid by the building owner.

Is there a fire officer vacancy in government now?

On 24 October 2026 two notices were open: Visakhapatnam Port's Fire Officer, last date 28 October, and MRPL's Fire Officer, last date 7 November. CISF showed no dated fire notice. Check the recruiter's own page, because dates close.

What qualification does a fireman need?

A 10th, Plus Two or Intermediate pass: Constable/Fire in CISF needs the 12th with Science, Kerala needs Plus Two, Andhra Pradesh needs Intermediate, and the Air Force's civilian Fireman needs matriculation with fire-fighting training. All add height and fitness tests.

Who recruits for fire jobs in India?

There is no single body. CISF, AAI, DRDO and the Air Force recruit their own; Staff Selection Commission recruits CISF Sub-Inspector/Fire; states use their own boards, such as Kerala PSC and Andhra Pradesh's SLPRB; companies like MRPL recruit directly.

What is the pay of a fireman?
