Overview

This bank holds 40 multiple-choice questions on the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) Rules, 2016, in four sets of ten: scope and definitions, licences and approvals, design, safety fittings and distances, and operation, testing, accidents and fees. Every explanation names the rule, the Schedule or the amending Gazette that settles the answer.

The Rules cover LPG, ammonia, LNG, cryogenic liquids and other gases in tanks over 1,000 litres and in road tankers, and PESO enforces them. Licence terms and fees follow the amendments, not the 2016 text: 10-year licences and the Schedule I fees since G.S.R. 374(E) of 5 June 2025, and no District Authority NOC since G.S.R. 448(E) of 5 June 2026.

Learn the numbers by rule: 1,000 litres, 110 percent, 5 and 2 years, 30 September and 60 days recur. The traps and the checklist below end the page.

Every question rests on the SMPV (U) Rules, 2016 (G.S.R. 1109(E) of 1 December 2016, PESO's copy of the signed Gazette), the amending Gazettes of 2021, 2025 and 2026, the Explosives Act, 1884 and PESO's procedure note of 2 December 2024, as read on 25 and 26 October 2026. It is study material, not legal advice: confirm a live licence question with PESO.

SMPV Rules MCQ bank at a glance: 8 facts

The bank is built from the SMPV (U) Rules, 2016, the Explosives Act, 1884 and the 2021, 2025 and 2026 amendments, read on 25 and 26 October 2026.

SMPV Rules MCQ: the amendments that change answers

Four Gazette dates explain why a 2016 textbook answer can now be wrong. The page on the Rules lists all seven amendments.

  1. 25 February 2019

    G.S.R. 148(E) brings an LS-1B auto-LPG licence at a Form XIV petrol pump under rule 47(1). G.S.R. 148(E), 2019

  2. 28 April 2025

G.S.R. 283(E) adds a table C of inspection and certification fees to Schedule I. G.S.R. 374(E) substituted Schedule I five weeks later, so no question tests table C. G.S.R. 283(E), 2025

  3. 5 June 2025

    G.S.R. 374(E): new Schedule I fees, 10-year licences, online filing and LS-1D for liquefied hydrogen. G.S.R. 374(E), 2025

  4. 5 June 2026

G.S.R. 448(E) omits rule 47, so the District Authority NOC is gone, and allows 9 mounded vessels in a group. G.S.R. 448(E), 2026

SMPV Rules MCQ: how Flamekite's exam pages treat the topic

None of the exam notices read for this site names the SMPV Rules, so this bank is practice for a job, not a paper prediction.

SMPV Rules MCQ: 6 common traps and the rule that settles each

Six mix-ups that cost marks, each settled by one rule or Gazette.

  • You may have read

Every gas tank needs an SMPV licence.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Only vessels over 1,000 litres of water capacity count (rule 2(xxxvii)); air receivers are excluded, and containers up to 1,000 litres are gas cylinders. SMPV(U) Rules 2016

  • You may have read

An SMPV storage licence lasts 5 years.

    Myth

    What the sources say

    5 years is the 2016 text and PESO's older FAQ. Since G.S.R. 374(E) of 5 June 2025, rule 51 allows up to 10 years, still ending on 30 September. G.S.R. 374(E), 2025

  • You may have read

A new licence needs the District Magistrate's NOC under rule 47.

    Myth

    What the sources say

    Rule 47 was omitted by G.S.R. 448(E) of 5 June 2026. Questions set on the 2016 or 2021 text, with a 4-month or 2-month limit, are out of date. G.S.R. 448(E), 2026

  • You may have read

Every vessel is tested every 5 years.

    Myth

    What the sources say

5 years is the ordinary interval; corrosive and toxic gas vessels go at 2 years (rule 19), and a Horton sphere has its own 2, 3 and 5 year pattern. SMPV(U) Rules 2016

  • You may have read

Mounded and above-ground LPG tanks keep the same distance.

    Myth

    What the sources say

    Table 3 of rule 22 gives a mounded tank a shorter distance, for example 10 m against 20 m for 30,000 litres. SMPV(U) Rules 2016

  • You may have read

The Explosives Act fine for any breach is Rs 5,000.

    Myth

    What the sources say

Rs 5,000 and 3 years in s.9B(1)(a) are for manufacture, import and export. Possession, use, sale and transport carry up to 2 years or Rs 3,000. Explosives Act 1884

SMPV Rules MCQ: 10-point revision checklist

Ten items to tick before you attempt the 40 questions again.

  • Pressure vessel: water capacity above 1,000 litres; cylinders over 500 ml up to 1,000 litres; air receivers excluded. SMPV(U) Rules 2016
  • Made under ss.5 and 7 of the Explosives Act, 1884; G.S.R. 1109(E) of 1 December 2016; PESO enforces. SMPV(U) Rules 2016
  • Licence forms: LS-1A storage, LS-1B auto-LPG, LS-1C LNG, LS-1D hydrogen, LS-2 road vessel, LS-2B ISO tank. PESO SMPV SOP
  • Term up to 10 years since 5 June 2025; storage licences end on 30 September; LS-2 runs from grant. G.S.R. 374(E), 2025
  • Rule 47 District Authority NOC omitted on 5 June 2026. G.S.R. 448(E), 2026
  • Renewal: same fee in time, double up to 3 months late, fresh licence after 1 year (rule 55). SMPV(U) Rules 2016
  • Suspension at most 3 months (rule 57); appeal within 60 days (rule 59). SMPV(U) Rules 2016
  • Relief valve: 110 percent start, 120 percent hold, tested yearly; vent 2 m above vessel and 3.5 m above ground. SMPV(U) Rules 2016
  • Periodic test 5 years, 2 years for corrosive or toxic gas; cryogenic pneumatic at 1.1 x MAWP. SMPV(U) Rules 2016
  • Fees since 2025: Rs 5,000 base for LS-1A, Rs 2,500 per extra 1,000 litres, cap Rs 50,000; plan approval Rs 2,000. G.S.R. 374(E), 2025

SMPV Rules MCQ: where to read the rule behind each answer

Four Flamekite pages teach the topics in these 40 questions.

SMPV Rules MCQ: what is not confirmed

Three points a reader may expect are not settled in the sources read, so no question tests them.

  • If Tables 5A and 5B of rule 22

PESO's 2024 note names Table 5A for LPG bottling below 100 MT and Table 5B for auto-LPG stations, while the 2016 text reads Table 4(B) and Table 5. Whether any value changed was not confirmed, so no question tests them. PESO SMPV SOP

  • If Rules 50(vi) and 55(8) after rule 47 was omitted

The 2016 text still mentions the District Authority NOC there. Whether a later amendment cleaned it up is not confirmed. G.S.R. 448(E), 2026

  • If Schedule V for liquefied hydrogen

Inserted in 2025 and not read for its fire numbers, so no question tests it. G.S.R. 374(E), 2025
